Horse Liability Insurance
If your horse kicks an innocent bystander, or in the event your horse breaks loose and causes a car accident, causing people to be injured, or property damage, your Personal Horse Owner's Liability Insurance policy provides bodily injury and property damage coverage, as well as legal cost of defense coverage. As with any kind of liability insurance, you may need protection if someone tried to sue you for bodily injury or property damage caused by your horse. Such a lawsuit might be against you personally, and might be for almost any amount (as opposed to the loss of your horse, for which you know exactly what the amount is - the costs you've already invested in the animal).
Horse liability insurance is commonly purchased by those who board their horses, and in fact many boarding facilities require it. Your homeowner's policy *might* give you some protection, however often it won't if your horse is boarded on another property, if you board someone else's horse on your property (even its its just a neighbor's horse) or you buy and sell more than a few horses per year. And some homeowner's policies may provide no protection. Consult your homeowner's policy or agent to be certain.
Personal Horse Owner's Liability insurance will cover up to five owned horses on one policy. However, it does NOT cover someone riding your horse. The reason for this is that when a person rides on your horse, they are aware of the inherent risks involved.
Note that we also offer Mortality insurance, which differs from the above. Mortality insurance is sort of a "life insurance" policy on your horse. It covers death from virtually any accident or sickness, and our policies do include colic surgery coverage as well as humane destruction by a veterinarian, should that be necessary. Major Medical and Surgical insurance is also available as an additional option to the Mortality: Visit our Mortality Insurance page for more information about these other two types of insurance, or a free quote.
